Green Jeep exploring the Oregon Dunes Recreation Area

The Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area covers roughly 31,500 acres and provides great experiences for those who enjoy Off-Highway Vehicle (OHV) riding, sandboarding, hiking, fishing, and water activities. Offering one of the most unique and expansive coastal sand dune systems in North America, the dunes span about 40 miles between the cities of Florence and Coos Bay.

Whether your preference is enjoying windswept dunes, freshwater lakes, forested trails, or the shoreline of the Pacific, regardless of whether you are an experienced adventurer or a budding nature enthusiast, this central coast playground has plenty to offer.

A Brief History of the Dunes

Over thousands of years, the combined forces of wind, water, and time formed the Oregon dunes. Prevailing coastal winds slowly shaped massive dunes, some rising 500 feet above sea level. In 1972, the area was designated as the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area, part of the Siuslaw National Forest. This designation was intended to preserve the region’s unique geology and ecosystems, while also allowing for public enjoyment and responsible recreation.

Location and Access

The Oregon Dunes span from the mouth of the Siuslaw River in Florence to Coos Bay, covering roughly 31,500 acres. Highway 101 runs parallel to the dunes and offers several convenient access points. The most popular entrances for recreational activities include:
• Florence Area: Great for hiking and sandboarding, as well as OHV access. Several access points, including Jessie M. Honeyman State Park, South Jetty OHV staging area, and many of the ATV rental locations, such as Torex ATV along Highway 101.
• Spinreel Area: Spinreel Campground near Lakeside is a popular OHV launch point.
• Winchester Bay and Umpqua Dunes: One of the largest and most active OHV areas

Activities at the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area

Off-Highway Vehicle (OHV) Riding

The dunes offer over 7,000 acres of open riding terrain for OHVs, making it one of the premier destinations in the United States for dune buggy and ATV enthusiasts. If you are in need of a rental, we always refer our guests to our favorite location, Torex.

Sandboarding

Oregon is home to the first sandboard park in the world, and home of “Doctor Dune,” Lon Beale, the founder of snowboarding. Located in Florence, Sand Master Park offers board rentals, lessons, and groomed sandboarding hills for all skill levels. Visitors can also take their boards to open dune areas designated for non-motorized recreation.

Hiking

Hiking trail along the Oregon dunes
Numerous trails wind through forested areas, wetlands, and along the dunes. Popular trails include:

• John Dellenback Trail (near Eel Creek): A scenic hike across open dunes to the beach.
• Threemile Lake Trail (near Tahkenitch): A more secluded hike through forest and wetland ecosystems.
• Carter Dunes Trail (north of Winchester Bay): A family-friendly trail with interpretive signage.

Fishing and Water Activities

Several freshwater lakes within the dunes offer fishing, boating, and kayaking opportunities. Cleawox Lake near Honeyman State Park is a popular spot for swimming and non-motorized boating. Tenmile Lake and Siltcoos Lake are well-known for their bass and trout fishing.

Best Time to Visit

While spring through early fall (April to October) may be the most popular time to visit the dunes, offering mild temperatures and drier weather, the dunes can be enjoyed all year round. July and August are peak months for recreation, so consider visiting in May, June, or September for a more relaxed experience. Our friends at American Expedition Vehicles (AEV) usually find February and early March a great time to explore the dunes and do some great adventuring.

Safety and Responsible Recreation

While the dunes are a place of fun and exploration, safety should also be considered. Here are some basic tips.

OHV Safety Tips:
• Always wear helmets and protective gear.
• Follow marked trails and riding boundaries.
• Watch for sudden drop-offs and other riders.

Sandboarding Tips:
• Start on smaller hills to get used to balance and control.
• Wear long sleeves to avoid abrasions.
• Apply wax to your board regularly for a smooth ride.
General Safety and Preparedness:
• Carry water, sunscreen, and layers for wind protection.
• Keep a GPS or map on hand. Dunes can be disorienting, especially in fog.
• Watch for wildlife and sensitive habitat areas, particularly nesting birds.

Other tips for a Great Visit

• Arrive early, especially on weekends or during peak summer months.
• Pack for the day, as services may be limited once inside the recreation area.
• Reserve motel rooms or campsites in advance if staying in town overnight. If you are staying with us at the Super 8 by Wyndham, or our sister property, the River House Inn, a Baymont by Wyndham, we hope you enjoy your activity on the dunes. If you decide to camp, Honeyman State Park and Umpqua Lighthouse State Park are popular options.
• Respect the dunes. Stick to designated areas, and pack out all trash.
• Check regulations before you go, as seasonal restrictions may apply to protect wildlife or habitat restoration efforts.
